How to Choose a Retirement Village If You Don't Drive

Louis Stone

Your focus right now is on moving into a retirement village; however, you also need to consider how you get out of the village once you live in it. If you don't drive or think that you'll stop driving in the near future, then you need to a village that has good transport services.

This matters a lot if you'll move to an out-of-town location. While you'll be happy living in your new community, you'll want to leave the village to shop, visit friends and family and even just to make day trips. What should you look for in terms of transport?

Does the Village Have Good Public Transport Links?

The more public transport links a village has, the better. You'll find it much easier to get out and about if you're close to train stations and bus routes.

Bear in mind that you ideally want quick and short access to public transport networks. There's a big difference between walking to a bus stop in a minute or so and having a 15-minute walk to a train station.

Keep in mind that some villages are actually part of a public bus route and have a bus stop that calls into the site or stops right outside. This is always a good option.

As well as checking that you can catch a train or bus easily from your village, you should also check timetables to see how often transport runs. For example, having a bus stop next to a village isn't so great if buses only run twice a day.

Look for regular routes that are used by other locals and not just people who live in the village. These routes are likely to operate more regularly.

Does the Village Provide Any Transport?

Some retirement villages lay on their own transport services. For example, a village might have a regular shuttle bus running from the centre of the village into the nearest town and back. The cost of the bus may be covered by your fees or you may have to pay to travel.

Some villages also organise trips out for their residents. For example, the village or a group of residents may hire a bus for sight-seeing trips or days out.

When you're looking around retirement villages, ask staff and residents about transport links. Have a scout around the area to find bus stops and train stations to see how close they are.
